Model API round-trip from Seoul, Oct 2026

p50/p95/p99 per provider (reachability, not generation time)

Scope, first: this is the round trip to reach each model API from Seoul — a TLS connection, a handshake and one small unauthenticated request, read to the end. It is not time to first token and not generation time. If you searched "llm latency" for how fast a model answers, this tells you only the floor under that: what the network and the provider's edge cost before any model runs.

Method

  • Source: WITAN's agent-api-observatory dataset, version 79, read with SQL on 2026-10-19. One record is one HTTPS GET to a provider's model-list endpoint (/v1/models or its equivalent; Gemini v1beta/models, OpenRouter auth/key), with no API key, 15 s timeout, body read to the end. latency_ms is the whole request.
  • No key means the answer is 401 (403 for Gemini): that still proves the provider's edge answered, which is what is measured. Every request in the window got its expected status: 0 failures across all 11 model APIs and both baselines.
  • Runs every 6 hours, two rounds each.
  • Two vantages in Seoul, reported separately:
  • aws-ap-northeast-2 — a cloud VM in AWS Seoul, 2026-10-02 → 10-14 (98 requests per target).
  • macbook-kr — a MacBook on home broadband in Korea, 2026-10-14 → 10-19 (40–41 per target).
  • (An earlier 18 requests per target, 09-29 → 10-02, from the platform's worker on its first host, match the AWS numbers within a few ms at p50 and are left out of the tables.)
  • Percentiles are over successful requests (all of them here), in milliseconds.

What the vantage costs

The two baselines show it. Cloudflare's trace (an edge in Seoul) is 17 ms from AWS and 38 ms from home broadband: about +21 ms for the last mile. Google's generate_204 goes from 73 to 151 ms, +78 ms — that path left Korea differently from home. Most model APIs moved by +20 to +80 ms at p50 between the two vantages, in line with the baselines; OpenAI moved only +20 ms, Anthropic +81 ms.

What stands out

  • OpenRouter is answered at the nearest edge (22 ms from AWS, 43 ms from home — the same as Cloudflare's trace), so its round trip is not where its latency is.
  • OpenAI has the slowest and widest round trip from AWS Seoul: p50 322 ms, p95 532 ms. From home its p95 was lower (481 ms).
  • Groq, xAI and Gemini are the quickest of the direct providers (124–181 ms p50 from either vantage).
  • Tails from home broadband: Cohere had two requests over 2 s, both on 2026-10-18 (08:53 and 14:53 UTC, 3,231 ms the largest); Mistral reached 1,392 ms and DeepSeek 1,072 ms once. Nothing over 700 ms was seen from AWS for any model API in 12 days.

A connect timeout that would not have fired

The largest single round trip in the window — connection, handshake, request and response — was 3.2 s (Cohere, home broadband). From AWS Seoul it was 0.7 s (OpenAI). So, from Seoul:

  • a connect-plus-first-byte timeout of 5 s would never have fired for any of these providers;
  • 2 s would have fired twice (Cohere from home broadband) and never from AWS;
  • the generation timeout is a separate number: set it on the read side, sized to the model and the output length, not to these figures.

Limits

  • Unauthenticated model-list endpoints: the provider's edge and routing, not its inference fleet. A provider may route authenticated generation requests elsewhere.
  • One region (Seoul), two vantages, 12 + 5 days, October 2026. Small n per target (98 and 40); p99 from 40 requests is close to the maximum.
  • No retries, no connection reuse: each request is a cold TLS connection.
